In 2013, our global outreach extended to Castilleja’s sister school in Shanghai, China, the Shanghai No. 3 Girls’ School. We hosted a delegation of five girls and two teachers from Shanghai for nine days during the weekend of the Silicon Valley Regional. During their stay, we offered workshops about robotics and STEM and hope to show them the true meaning of FIRST. Our goal is to inspire them to establish their own team in Shanghai – the first all girls’ FRC team in China – so that they, in turn can also spread their love of STEM. For our commitment to spreading the message of FIRST globally, Gatorbotics was awarded the Joan Z. Lonergan Global Investigator award at the end of the 2013 school year.
The Shanghai No. 3 Girls’ School students returned in 2014 to extend their knowledge and awareness of STEM and to attend the Silicon Valley Regional with Gatorbotics. We hosted a series of activities in our Bourn Lab which taught the girls different skillsets within STEM. Gatorbotics and the Shanghai No. 3 Girls’ School created many good memories together while both learning more about STEM.
