Happy 2016 and FIRST Stronghold! Team 1700 is having a great start to the new season – read more to find out what we did in the first two days.
Day 1 (Saturday, kickoff): The seniors were up dark and early (5am) on kickoff morning, driving down to San Jose to watch the release of the challenge. They then returned to school in time for a new member orientation by the sophomores and a team info presentation by the leads. Then the team was off to begin our game analysis!
For the first two hours, the team carefully combed over the game manual in small groups. After lunch, we compiled a list of all the ways to score, defend, and receive penalties; we also asked clarifying questions on the rules. We ended the day with a few hours of strategy discussion, primarily on damaging defenses, low vs. high goal scoring, and challenging vs. scaling the tower in the endgame.
(If you’re curious, here is the challenge introduction video.)
Day 2 (Monday): After one day of rest and individual pondering, the team got back together into small groups to continue our strategy discussions. After a yummy lunch, we regrouped and shared our findings. The general leaning was away from specializing in defenses and instead having a strong, general-purpose drivetrain and scoring the high goal. Some details (such as whether we want to fit under the lowbar, and how consistent we can be at scoring in the high goal) still need prototyping. We let the strategy discussions stew for a little bit and turned our attention in the last two hours to building some of the defenses out of wood.
Our next steps will be to finish building the defenses, fine tune our robot requirements, and begin brainstorming and prototyping subsystems. Stay tuned for our progress!
